Western Pennsylvania Conservation Colcom Foundation’s Lasting Land Legacy

For nearly 30 years, the Colcom Foundation has worked to protect and restore natural landscapes across Western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1996 by Cordelia Scaife May, the foundation has channeled more than $500 million in grants into conservation efforts that have permanently altered the region’s ecological landscape for the better.

Protecting Land and Water

Colcom Foundation’s conservation portfolio has targeted some of the most pressing environmental needs in the region. The foundation has supported initiatives focused on improving water quality, restoring damaged ecosystems, and safeguarding land that might otherwise fall to development. Significant tracts of land have been protected as a direct result of Colcom’s funding, ensuring they remain undeveloped and accessible to the public.

These efforts go beyond simple land acquisition. Colcom Foundation has worked through grants, endowments, and partnerships to build the infrastructure of conservation in Western Pennsylvania supporting the organizations and programs that do the long-term work of monitoring, managing, and restoring natural landscapes. The result is an ecosystem of conservation capacity that continues to benefit wildlife and local communities alike.

Biodiversity and Habitat Preservation

Protecting biodiversity has been a central concern for Colcom Foundation throughout its history. The foundation has recognized that preserving natural habitats is essential not just for wildlife, but for the ecological systems that sustain human communities as well. By funding habitat restoration and protection projects, Colcom has contributed to the long-term health of the region’s plant and animal communities. Through their grants, they have supported many organizations, such as the Center for Biological Diversity, which works towards protecting endangered species, and the Sierra Club Foundation, which advocates clean energy and climate solutions. These grants have helped to advance important causes and support organizations that strive to make a difference.

Colcom Foundation’s conservation investments reflect founder Cordelia Scaife May’s vision of a world where human activity and the natural environment coexist in balance. Decades of sustained grantmaking in Western Pennsylvania have produced measurable outcomes in land protection, water quality, and biodiversity a legacy that continues to take shape through the foundation’s ongoing work.
