Michael Polk on Why the CEO Role Must Evolve

The image of the chief executive as a distant, untouchable visionary may be giving way to something more grounded. Michael Polk, former CEO of Newell Brands, believes the role is changing and that leaders who refuse to adapt will be left behind.

After more than 40 years leading companies of vastly different sizes, Polk has developed a clear-eyed view of what it takes to succeed at the top. His experience spans large public conglomerates and smaller private equity-backed companies, giving him a perspective few executives can claim.

Adapting to the Demands of the Role

At major public corporations, CEOs operate primarily through delegation. “The way you do that is by focusing on the strategic agenda of the company in allocating resources in a way that delivers against the strategic plan you’ve got. You’re typically working through other people and leading through other people to get things done,” Polk explains.

Investor relations also consume a large share of a public CEO’s time. Michael Polk Newell Brands spent roughly 30 percent of his time engaging with investors and public markets during his tenure at the helm of a public company. For him, value creation remains the north star of any CEO role, regardless of company size.

Universal Truths Across Company Types

Whether leading a multinational brand or a leaner private operation, Polk points to three enduring qualities that define effective chief executives. “Accessibility, authenticity, and making sharp choices are all central to being successful in the role,” he says. These qualities hold regardless of organizational complexity or sector.

Polk came out of retirement in 2019 to lead Implus, a private equity-owned company, where his work is far more hands-on than his earlier roles. The shift from delegation to direct involvement required a personal adjustment but one he has embraced. The experience reinforced his belief that the most effective leaders remain flexible enough to meet their organization where it is, not where they expect it to be.
