One of the things I can say about working as a police officer is that you can never have too many officers working by your side. It seems that violent crimes in our city are again on the rise, and there aren’t enough officers it seems to stay ahead of the issue. That was all about to change from the most unlikely of sources this year, allowing my team of officers to finally feel like we are getting ahead of the trouble.
On a chance visit to the local jail to meet with an inmate, one of the officers on duty asked to speak with me after my meeting. It seems that while i was talking to that inmate, other inmates were on the phone talking about me. The reason this officer was able to tell so quickly was because the jail now uses a call monitoring system developed by Securus Technologies that scans all jail calls by computer.
The LBS software identifies chatter of concern and alerts officers instantly. That is how they are able to stay ahead of trouble in the jail, and now it gave me an idea how we could use this to prevent violent crimes in our town too. Securus Technologies already has this system in thousands of jails in America, and the company CEO says that the goal of his employees is making the world safer for all.
Case in point, me and my officers were trying to break up a local ring who were involved with a number of violent burglaries. With no leads, one day the LBS software sent an alert that one of the crew was in jail on an unrelated charge still talking shop with his crew. We connected the dots and make seven arrests that week as a result.
